Honest gear guides for Canadian winters.
True North Winter is a small, independent Canadian website that helps homeowners and drivers get ready for winter, from clearing the driveway to keeping the pipes from freezing to making sure the car starts at -30 °C.
Why we started
Most gear guides online are written for American readers: U.S. prices, U.S. stores, U.S. weather. That isn’t much help when you’re comparing prices at Canadian Tire, figuring out Quebec’s winter tire dates, or wondering whether a product is even sold north of the border.
We wanted a resource that starts with Canada:
- Prices in Canadian dollars, with a reminder that they change often
- Canadian retailers, including Amazon.ca, Home Depot Canada and Canadian Tire
- Metric first, with common imperial measurements alongside
- Provincial context where it matters, like winter tire laws and regional climate differences
How we research
We’re upfront about our process: our guides are research-based roundups, not hands-on lab tests. We don’t claim to have personally tested every product we write about.
For each guide we:
- Check that each product is a real, current model sold at Canadian retailers
- Compare manufacturer specifications, warranty terms and retailer listings
- Consult public guidance from sources like Natural Resources Canada and provincial governments where relevant
- Explain who each product suits, and who should look elsewhere
If we ever do test something ourselves, we’ll say so clearly in that article.
How we make money
Some links on True North Winter are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps keep the site running. It never changes the price you pay, and retailers and brands don’t pay us to be included or to get a better ranking. Read our full Affiliate Disclosure.
Who we are
True North Winter is run by a small Canadian team. Articles are published under the byline The True North Winter team.
